The remake of Barbarella is back on...
Joe Gazzam (Riot, set for release in 2011) has been hired to pen a new version of the the screenplay centering on the character made famous by Jane Fonda in the 1968 original says The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on Jean-Claude Forest's 1960's French comic, Barbarella is a female mercenary who roams the universe of a distant future, on missions that require fearlessness, ingenuity and sensuality.
The remake will drop the 60's camp with more of a focus on adventure. The sexuality will be kept in, but likely toned down somewhat.
Robert Rodriguez was originally attached to direct his fiancee Rose McGowan starring as the title character back in early 2007 from a script by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade,.
However budget disputes led to the project falling apart.
Robert Luketic was put next in line to direct back in June and remains Original producer Dino De Laurentiis will serve in the same capacity on the remake.
No studio or distributor has been found and De Laurentiis won't begin shopping it around until the script is completed and locked.
