Born in 1932, O'Toole began his acting career on stage and then made his TV debut in the 1950s before making the leap to the big screen with a small role in 1959's The Day They Robbed the Bank of England.

O'Toole announced his retirement from acting in June 2012, saying he had lost the "heart" for his film career.
At the time, he said: "My professional acting life, stage and screen, has brought me public support, emotional fulfilment and material comfort. It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I've shared the inevitable lot of all actors - flops and hits."
