The film will focus on Hunter Scott, a young boy who caused a stir in 1996 when the research he did for a school history project caused a re-examination of the case of Charles Butler McVay III. McVeigh had been unjustly court-martialed and blamed for the sinking of the ship and the loss of hundred sailors in the shark infested waters while they were adrift and awaiting rescue over five days.
Scott eventually testified before Congress and exonerated McVay who had committed suicide in 1968.
Robert Schenkkan ("The Pacific," "The Quiet American")the script for the currently untitled project which the Downey's will produce.
There's also a rival pic called "U.S.S Indianapolis: Men of Courage", a $30 million "action-oriented homage" tells Variety
Cam Cannon and Richard Rionda Del Castro wrote the completed script which they say won't deal with the consequences after the incident or McVay's fate. Rather their take is a "testament" to the crew of the ship and "their will to survive in the face of certain death"
J.J. Abrams tried to adapt Scott's story a few years ago as a potential directing vehicle.but that was put in turnaround.
