A new film adaptation of the Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber 1972 musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" is on tap @ Universal Pictures says the Risky Biz Blog.
The musical was first made into a film in 1973 by director Norman Jewison and examines the last few weeks of Jesus' (played on stage and on screen by Ted Neeley) life.
The depiction of a conflicted and sympathetic African-American Judas Iscariot (played by the late great Carl Anderson) caused a bit of a stir upon its initial release.
500 Days of Summer helmer Marc Webb is circling the pic to possibly call action but is not officially signed on the dotted line.
Not much for musicals but I have to admit Neely and Anderson were a powerful duo when I saw the 70's pic with my sister--a number of years ago....Tough sandals to fill for sure...
The success of the Mamma Mia! musical adaptation last year has the big U. no doubt having visions of $ signs and Jesus.
