A native of Oahu, Sunn was a surfing pioneer in the late 1960s as well as an expert diver, a black belt in karate and a hula dancer. She founded a surf contest for children to combat juvenile delinquency and fought breast cancer for 15 years before her death in 1998.
Carrere and Simon Wakelin wrote the screenplay.
Fellow actress turned filmmaker Martha Coolidge will call action.
Carrere, Wakelin and J. Todd Harris will produce with shooting set to take place early next year.
It's nice to see Carrere stepping out in a starring role--till now her biggest films have probably been the Wayne's World pics.
