Mike Newell ("Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire," "Donnie Brasco") will direct a new film adaptation of author John Wyndham's classic 1951 sci-fi novel "The Day of the Triffids" says Deadline.
Triffids are an intelligent and aggressive plant species with a
whip-like venomous sting, a plant that mankind is cultivating for its
oils. When a global meteor shower renders most of humanity blind,
civilisation collapses and those few who can still see attempt to
establish a colony in the countryside.
The story was previously adapted on film in 1963 and twice for
British television in 1981 and most recently in 2009.
"Luther" creator Neil Cross wrote the adapted script that is likely to stick
close to Wyndham's novel.
Sam Raimi, Robert G. Tapert, Don Murphy, Mark Gordon and Michael Preger will produce the film.
