Effie was a teenager who married famed London art critic John Ruskin (Greg Wise) in the 1850s. The marriage turned out to be a disaster with Ruskin refusing to consummate it. She eventually fell for Ruskin's protege John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge).
Thompson will portray Effie's mentor Lady Eastlake Julie Walters and Derek Jacobi play Effie's parents Edward Fox is Lady Eastlake's husband.
Richard Laxton is calling action when production kicks off October 17th in Scotland, London, and Venice.
