Iron Man 2 soars to the top but breaks NO records doing it...

Marvel Studios' summer-launching comics actioner "Iron Man 2" handily outpaced its franchise predecessor but without industry records, opening atop domestic rankings with an estimated $133.6 million in weekend boxoffice.

The first "Iron Man" pic -- also starring Robert Downey Jr., who enjoyed a personal-best bow with the sequel -- debuted with $98.6 million in May 2008.

Some had suggested that broad pre-release buzz could translate into a record opening by "Iron Man 2," but the $158.4 million first-frame performance of "The Dark Knight" in July 2008 remains secure in the record books.

Distributed by Paramount, "Iron Man 2" marked the fifth biggest bow ever and Paramount's best to date.

Heated expectations for the opening gave us knots in our subject, a relieved Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige conceded Sunday.

"But what untied those knots was watching the film with a paying audience," Feige added. "It really was an indication to us that they're still with us for this ride."

A franchise three-quel is expected to hit multiplexes sometime in 2013.

"We do have a contract with Robert Downey Jr. to do it, and it will come after 'The Avengers,' " Feige confirmed.

Paramount is set to unspool "Avengers" -- an ensemble superhero actioner featuring "Iron Man" and other Marvel characters -- on May 4, 2012.

Elsewhere this weekend, Warner Bros.' remake of horror pic "A Nightmare on Elm Street" finished in second place in its sophomore session with $9.2 million, despite falling a big 72% from its opening tally for $48.5 million in cumulative coin. DreamWorks Animation's leggy 3D adventure "How to Train Your Dragon" was third with $6.8 million from its seventh frame and cume totaling $201.1 million.

Summit Entertainment's Brendan Fraser comedy "Furry Vengeance" dipped 40% from its week-earlier bow to fetch $4 million in sixth place, with a 10-day cume of $11.6 million. And in a near-wide release, Focus Features unspooled "Babies" -- a documentary about the first year in four babies' lives -- in 593 locations and grossed $1.6 million in 10th place.

That represented an average $2,951 per site and a satisfactory result for a documentary bowing so broadly...

Ape Date

Fox has announced a June 24th 2011 release date for "Rise of the Apes", their planned prequel to the Planet of the Apes franchise says Variety

The cautionary tale is set in San Francisco in which "man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy."

Unlike past installments, the apes this time will be CG-animated with Weta Digital on the effects

Rupert Wyatt ("The Escapist") is set to direct a script written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.

The premise harks back to the 1968--But I am still dubious about this one...

Iron Man 2 made an estimated $52 million on its opening day in the United States, a number boosted by $7.5 million from Thursday midnight shows reports Deadline Hollywood.

That figure has early estimates of a three-day opening weekend at around $130-140 million, placing it around about the fifth highest opening weekend of all time - just shy of last year's "New Moon " at $142.8 million.

IM 2 has the widest domestic release in history, playing in 4,380 U.S. theaters. Internationally the film, opened last Friday, and has finished its first week with an overseas haul of about $140 million.

Final review averages were solid for the sequel, with a 74 % and a 6.5/10 score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 57/100 metascore and 7.5/10 user score on Metacritic.

But you'll recall the more acclaimed first "Iron Man had a 93% (7.6/10) on RT and a 79/100 (8.3/10) on MC.--Meaning IM 2 final theatrical tally could be lower if general audiences feel the same way about the sequel as the critics--good but not great

Black Joins Battle

Summer 2012 just got even more interesting with the announcement of a May 25th release date for Men in Black 3 reports The Wrap.

Will Smith has signed on to return as Agent Jay and Tommy Lee Jones is in advanced negotiations to return as Agent Kay in the 3-D sequel

Josh Brolin is also in talks to play the younger version of Kay and says Script Is 'Really, Really Good'‎ .

Barry Sonnenfeld directs from a script by Etan Cohen. and production aims to kick off this Fall

The pic will open against Peter Berg's game adaptation Battleship scheduled to open the same day.

Winnie's Ex

Terrence Howard is set to play Nelson Mandela in the biopic Winnie reports BT Vision.

Darrell Roodt directs from a script he co-wrote with Paul Johnson and Andre Pieterse. using the book Winnie Mandela: A Life by Anne Mare du Preez Bezdrob as its blueprint.

Unlike her ex-husband who has become universally deified, Winnie is a more complex figure. A controversial activist who was a key component in the anti-apartheid struggle, she later fell out of favor due to her hardline approach and later was convicted of charges in relation to the torture and murder of a 14-year old police informer by one of her bodyguards.

Jennifer Hudson is set to play Winnie

Shooting begins May 31st throughout South Africa.

Jones Is Zola

Toby Jones has won the role of the villainous scientist Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenge reports Heat Vision.

In the comics Zola is a biochemist who became one of the world's first genetic engineers and worked under Adolf Hitler and Red Skull, the latter financing some of Zola's experiments. Zola survived the war by transferring his mental essence into a robot.

Jones joins a cast which includes Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell and Sebastian Stan. Joe Johnston directs and shooting kicks off next month in the UK.

Jones is very busy-- he'll next be seen in "Your Highness," What's Wrong with Virginia" and "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn". He's also shooting "The Rite" with Anthony Hopkins this Summer as well.

Real Steal

Having just landed a role in D.J. Caruso’s I Am Number Four actor Kevin Durand is now in negotiations to join Real Steel reports Variety.

Based on "I Am Legend" author Richard Matheson's short story set in the near future when boxers have been replaced by human-controlled two-ton robots, Hugh Jackman stars as a former boxer-turned-manager who reunites with his estranged son (Dakota Goyo) to take his fighter to the championships.

Durand would play the Texan promoter of robot boxing. He and Jackman previously worked together on "X-Men Origins: Wolverine".

The roles would essentially be shot back to back with 'Four' kicking off filming this month and 'Steel' next month. Durand would shoot 'Four' first and then immediately segue into shooting 'Steel'.

Shawn Levy directs the $80 million film which is based on a story by Richard Matheson Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider will produce.

The pic slated to hit theaters on November 18th, 2011.

New Hacker Helmer

Cube and "Splice" director Vincenzo Natali will call the shots on a film adaptation of cyberpunk author William Gibson's 1984 influential read Neuromancer says The Hollywood Reporter.

The story follows a washed-up computer hacker hired by a mysterious employer to work on the ultimate hack.

Joseph Kahn was attached to helm the flick, with Hayden Christensen in the lead that no longer seems to be the case.

Neuromancer the film has been in the pipeline for a few years. The Matrix franchise was inspired by the book

Froggy Love

Jason Priestley will direct the romantic comedy Mud Puppy says The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on a true story, the film follows a playboy wine-lover battling a female environmentalist for control of a frog-plagued wine vineyard.

Monica Hilborn wrote the script.

No word on casting. Production is set for summer 2011.

High Five

Dwayne Johnson is in talks to join "Fast Five" the latest pic in the Fast and the Furious saga says Deadline.

The story will see Dom (Vin Diesell) and Brian (Paul Walker) as fugitives being pursued by the Feds led by Johnson.

Chris Morgan penned the script and Justin Lin is directing the pic that hits theaters June 10th 2011.

Good call giving Dom and Brian a formidable adversary.

Foiled Plots And Secrets

Paramount Pictures has pushed back the bow of J.J. Abrams-produced and Brad Bird--directed "Mission: Impossible IV " seven months - from May 27th 2011 to December 16th 2011.

No surprise, production would've had to be rushed through in order to reach the Memorial Day date. Many of the films the studio has set up for next summer are already considerably further along the production pipeline

Paramount's surprisingly packed Summer 2011 slate already includes Thor" (May 6th), "Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom " (June 3rd), "Transformers 3" (July 1st) and "Captain America: The First Avenger" (July 21st).

The Steven Spielberg /Abrams top-secret project "Super 8" is also scheduled for next Summer but hasn't set a date yet, the pic could take up the late May slot left by 'Mission', though it seems more likely to open in August.

Greta Gerwig ("Greenberg") is in talks to play the female lead in the "Arthur" remake says Deadline.

Gerwig would play the charismatic shoplifter who tempts Arthur (Russell Brand) who risks his trust fund to take a chance on this woman who makes him feel alive.

Liza Minnelli played the character in the original. Episodic director of TV hit Modern Family Jason Winer is helming the pic from Peter Baynham's script.

Helen Mirren is Hobson.

The film will be produced by Chris Bender, Larry Brezner and Kevin McCormick and comes to theaters in 2011

Wiiging Out

Kristen Wiig has optioned Monica Drake's 2007 novel Clown Girl for the big screen reports Deadline.

The dark romance/comedy follows Nita, a woman who performs at street fair's as Sniffles the Clown and struggles to make a living while trying to resist the potentially lucrative prostitution trade involving clown fetishists. She soon falls for a local cop.

Wiig apparently plans to write the adapted script and play the lead character, no word on when this would happen given she's very in demand right now

Closing In

Michael Imperioli has joined the indie supernatural horror-thriller "Foreclosure" reports Variety.

Written and directed by Richard Ledes ("A Hole in One," "The Caller"), the story is set on a neighborhood block in which nearly every house sits vacant and bank-owned.

Wendell Pierce ("Treme"), Bill Raymond, Jeff Burchfield, Meital Dohan, Brandon Gill, Spencer List, Tristan Laurence Perez, William Stone Mahoney and Roger Robinson also star.

Ged Dickersin ("City Island") produces the pic.

Moody Movie

Producers Sarah Siegel Magness and and Gary Magness ("Precious") are developing a film adaptation of Megan McDonald's popular children's book series "Judy Moody" says Variety.

McDonald will co-adapt the script with Kathy Waugh.

The series chronicles the humorous adventures of a female third-grader and her brother lovingly called Stink.

John Schultz ("Aliens in the Attic") will direct the adaptation

This Is The Nightmare Man

Bryan Bertino director of the horror hit The Strangers will pen and direct "This Man" Deadline

Based on real life accounts, the story follows an ordinary guy who discovers that people he has never met are seeing him in their dreams. Now he must find out why he is the source of nightmares for strangers all over the world.

Part of the deal includes film rights to the This man website created by Italian sociologist Andrea Natella.

Bertino Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert and Adrienne Biddle will produce.

No production date was released for the film.

Robert Inks Inkubus

Former Freddy Krueger Robert Englund will star in the horror pic "Inkubus" reports Variety.

Carl Dupre and Glenn Ciano concocted the story of a skeleton crew working the final shift at a soon-to-be demolished police station.

The night takes a gruesome turn when the demon Inkubus calmly walks into the station holding a severed head and begins to confess a litany of crimes, some dating back to the Middle Ages

William Forsythe, Joey Fatone, Jonathan Silverman, Mike Cerrone and Michelle Ray Smith also star.

Ciano is directing with now underway in Rhode Island

Hop-Out Hop In

Elizabeth Perkins is leaving her acclaimed cable series Showtime's Weeds after five years for a return to films says The Hollywood Reporter.

She has signed on to play a mother figure in the live-action/CG-animated hybrid comedy "I Hop"

In the pic James Marsden plays an unemployed slacker who accidentally injures the Easter Bunny (voiced by Russell Brand) and must take him in as he recovers.

As Fred struggles with the world's worst houseguest, both will learn what it takes to finally grow up. Perkins will play Marsden's exasperated mother.

Kaley Cuoco co-stars

Tim Hill directs and an April 1st 2011 release date has been set. Perkins is also developing a comedy series in which she will star.

Budget Booty

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides co-writer Terry Rossio has dismissed recent repotrs about the film's budget being cut back. Taking to his official message boards, Rossio says:

"My guess is the budget on P4 will be higher than P1, in the realm of P2, and lower than P3. (And the difference there has more to do with the difficulty of shooting two movies, deadlines, hurricanes, tank issues, multiple star salaries, and myriad other details.) Hard to even tell, as the budget on P4 contains various tax deferments, and the decision has still not been made to shoot in 3D. Actually, the budget on P4 isn't even set yet, so really, there is nothing to report.

The truth is, the studio and everyone involved fought just as hard to lower the budgets of P1, P2, and P3 as they are on P4. Nothing has changed. Are there budget meetings on P4 to look for ways to get the most for the money? Of course. Same as on every film. It's a complete non-story. But now the 'spin' is out there, sure to be repeated."

The film is based on the events of Lovelace's life depicted in her book Ordeal, delving into the "difficult stuff she went through and overcame," according to producer Wali Razaqi
Lovelace, whose real name was Linda Susan Boreman, ultimately denounced her pornography career, becoming a spokesperson for the anti-pornography movement.
Matthew Wilder will be directing the flick.

"Field" Of Dreams

J.J. Abrams told Vulture that his secret pic Super 8 has nothing to do with the Cloverfield Sequel/Prequel as rumored yesterday.

"You have to check [out the trailer]," he says. "But it has nothing whatsoever to do with Cloverfield, despite your expert reporting."

When asked the specifics of the new trailer, Abrams replied, "I won't be able to tell you until it's done."

He confirmed that the trailer will be attached to Iron Man 2 this weekend...

The Soup host and Community star Joel McHale has joined the comedy "What's Your Number" says The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on Karyn Bosnak's book "20 Times a Lady the story follows a woman (Anna Faris) who thought she'd find her perfect guy by the time she'd slept with a maximum of twenty men.

Waking up after a drunken night in her boss's bed, she realises she's reached that limit but hasn't achieved it. Rather than increasing the number or staying celibate, she tracks down all her ex-partners in an attempt to make things work with one of them.

Joel will play Faris' "mildly charming" boss, who inadvertently sets off her quest through her sexual past for the perfect man. »

The cast includes Andy Samberg Zachary Quinto possibly Chris Evan as her womanizing next door neighbor, Matt Bomer as her dream guy, and Ari Graynor as her soon to be wed sister.

Mark Mylod (HBO's Entourage) directs from a script by Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan

Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson are producing the comedy.

Shooting kicks off later this month.

This has been a busy time for McHale who also landed a role in David Frankel's upcoming comedy "The Big Year".

Rashida Jones, Anjelica Huston, Rosamund Pike, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Anderson and Tim Blake Nelson, Jim Parsons, JoBeth Williams, Brian Dennehy and Kevin Pollak are inked to co-star.

"Big Year" follows three men launching into a bird-watching competition--based upon Mark Obmascik's book Filming is underway on that pic.

Super Psyched

The top secret trailer for J.J. Abrams new produced pic attached to " Iron Man 2" will show "a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the 70's/80's" reports Vulture.

"When they develop the film, they notice that there’s an alien creature in the frame."

Sources tell the site that "Super 8" is "absolutely connected" to Cloverfield and is "possibly a prequel, but not a Sequel".

No word on when the trailer will pop-up online, though bootlegs will show up by Friday unless the studio puts it out on their own.

Racing Stripes

Samuel Le Bihan will star in and actor Eric Stoltz (pictured) will direct "Racing Patriots" says Variety.

Frederic Helmer's script follows three Grand prix champs who escaped from France in 1940 and were trained by Winston Churchill's Special Operations Unit as spies and saboteurs. They soon help lead the French resistance during the occupation under the noses of the Gestapo and Nazi terrorism experts.

Le Bihan will play Robert Benoist. The other two leads-William Grover-Williams , and Jean-Pierre Wimille- have yet to be cast.

Dana MacDuff, Brandon MacDuff, Patrice Bonneyrat, Laurent Tolleron, Pierre Morel and Jarratt Carson will produce.

Shooting kicks off this winter.

Sax Drive

Chiwetel Ejiofor ("Serenity, Children Of Men) is formally attached to play African musician and activist Fela Kuti in the upcoming biopic Fela says Deadline New York.

Based on Michael Veal‎'s book, the story follows the life of the late African musician and activist whose music fused American jazz, funk and West African drums.

He had 27 wives, and suffered personal costs for speaking out against oppression in Nigeria. Ejiofor has apparently been learning to play piano and saxophone to prepare for the role.

Though Fela is the subject of the Broadway musical FELA!which received 11 Tony Award nominations yesterday, the musical is not connected to the film in any way.

Steve McQueen ("Hunger") is directing from a script he co-wrote with Biyi Bandele. Lydia Pilcher and Leigh Blake are producing.

Keen Insight

Catherine Keener and Emma Stone have joined the voice cast of the 3-D CG-animated caveman-era comedy “The Croods” says Heat Vision.

Nicolas Cage is Grug, the patriarch of a family pushed out of its home by an earthquake. Keener will voice Ugga, the mother of the Crood clan and Stone will voice their daughter Eep.

Ryan Reynolds plays Gy, a nomad who introduces them to the concept of “tomorrow” and catches the romantic interest of Eep.

Chris Sanders (“How To Train Your Dragon”) and Kirk DeMicco (“Space Chimps”) are directing and penned the script based on an earlier screenplay DeMicco developed with John Cleese.

The film has been scheduled for a March 30th 2012 release. Kristine Belson and Jane Hartwell are producing the pic

Keener and Jane Fonda have joined the cast of Bruce Beresford's generational indie drama Peace, Love, and Misunderstanding says Reuters.

Christina Mengert and Joseph Muszynski's script centers on a conservative lawyer (Keener) who takes her son and daughter to the house of their estranged, hippie grandmother (Fonda) in Woodstock after her husband leaves her. They each find love in unexpected places.

Beresford ("Driving Miss Daisy," "Mao's Last Dancer") was also recently attached to helm the Ada Lovelace biopic "Enchantress of Numbers ".

This will be Fonda's first film project since 2007's "Georgia Rule".

Filming kicks off this July in New York's Hudson River Valley.

Shield The Truth

Jon Favreau has confirmed to MTV News that the character Howard Stark, father of "Iron Man" Tony Stark, is gonna crossover to Joe Johnston’s " Captain America: The First Avenger".

Mad Men's John Slattery in playing Howard Stark in "Iron Man 2", a character who appears via a 1970's Stark Expo presentation video shot on a film reel that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) gives to Tony. A younger version of the character is expected to appear in 'America'.

“Yeah, because he was around then. ['Captain America'] is World War II. It wouldn’t be that same actor, probably, because he would be much younger.[Howard Stark] was starting out during that time, and [he] was involved with the war effort, much like Howard Hughes” Favreau reveals.

A half-assembled version of Captain America's shield is in Tony Stark's workshop in "Iron Man 2" and is used at one point in the film to prop up an important experiment.

Scott VS. The Reshoots

Edgar Wright told Collider that he's going to do a few days of reshoots for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

"We are not even redoing one full scene, nor any action, just some bits and bobs and new jokes and beats that I wrote with [co-writer Michael] Bacall & [creator Bryan Lee] O'Malley."

In fact some material from the sixth and final volume in the comic series Finest Hour will be included.

Wright adds "I’m excited about it. It was my suggestion to the studio and the bits and pieces are all things that I want to tweak."

No worries folks. Wright says both Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead also had a few days of additional shooting - pickups that included the now iconic scene of a granny being kicked in the face.
