Test Audiences Help Delay GI Joe 2 And More

The official reason for the delay of the debut of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation by a full nine months from June 29th to March 29th 2013 was that it gives Paramount the time it needed for a proper 3-D film conversion--including some additional shooting of scenes to take advantage of the format.

Now Deadline reports that the public's growing appeal for Channing Tatum also factored into the delay...

SPOILERS AHEAD

In what's been really no big secret Tatum's Duke character, the hero of the first film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra gets killed at the start of 'Retaliation'. It seems the death is so abrupt that it did not sit well with test audiences, this as the studio only recently became aware of the power of 'The Tatum' and his rise in cinema stature in recent months.

Their source says:

"In our first screening of the film the reaction from audiences was good but with two big concerns: 1) They didn't like the fact that Channing and The Rock really didn't have any time to develop a friendship before Channing died, and 2) Why wasn't it going to be in 3D? We went back and shot another week with Channing to develop more of his story with The Rock, which made the film play much better. But we didn't have the time to be in 3D."

END SPOILERS

Beyond Tatum there was also the issue,of what could be considered unfairly nicknamed the 'Kitsch factor' - how big-budget disasters "Battleship" and "John Carter" would've ended up far worse had it not been for each film raking in $200 million worth of ticket revenue from international markets (mostly through 3D screenings).

The source says:

"That ['Battleship' and 'John Carter' bombed in the States] was just a wake-up call that said to us we need to offer the best version of the film irrespective of summer market share to ensure the best possible performance. Not being in 3-D will cost us a ton of business internationally."

There was also the competition to consider--Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper flick Magic Mike, which also stars Channing Tatum but in a much bigger and more revealing role. The source claims Paramount "didn’t want uniformed Channing to compete with stripping Channing on the same weekend."

Meantime over in THR, a producer told the trade that "The Amazing Spider-Man" reboot opening on July 3rd later caused concern that the film simply couldn't compete - especially in a Summer where only the biggest film The Avengers is boffo films from Tim Burton's take on Dark Shadows" to Men In Black 3 have dissapointed.

With the delay though, the most important question now becomes one of cost. 'Retaliation' cost $125 million and the studio claims that only $5 million will be spent on the conversion as all the extra time allows them to negotiate better deals with the companies doing the work.

A delay like this is almost always seen as a negative. In recent years though, Paramount has had success with films that were delayed by at least four months from their intended release such as "Star Trek" and Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island".

Byung-hun Lee is the only other returning cast member other than Tatum

French actress Elodie Yung will play a ninja member of the Joe squad named Jinx Adrianne Palicki will play the female lead in the film as Lady Jaye/Alison R. Hart-Burnett. She is the Joe Team’s covert operations specialist Ray Stevenson will play the villain. Trek 2: "Kahn" Artist

The speclution and back and forth about whether Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch's villain role in the as yet Untitled Star Trek Sequel. is none other than Khan Noonien Singh got a bit more twisted with actor Simon Pegg who plays Scotty, saying the claims are bunk in an interview with The Telegraph.

Kahn is the genetically enhanced human of the 1967 episode of "Star Trek" called Space Seed as well as the big screen sequel Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan played by Ricardo Montalban and in the process solidified himself as the best Trek villain period...,

"It’s not Khan. That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not. I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me – it’s beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them. It just spoils the film. It masquerades as interest in the movie but really it’s just nosiness and impatience. You just want to say, ‘Oh f--- off! Wait for the film.'"

Rumors have swirled of Khan's involvement since the film was announced. When Cumberbatch got the role as the film's villain, I noted that he is physically all wrong for Kahn

I know trekkers who are convinced that Cumby is playing Kahn's son in the film...No fooling...I still hope that Pegg is telling the truth

AICN posted a story a few weeks ago saying that Cumberbatch was indeed playing Khan after all....OK if not Kahn then who? Pegg only says he's "not just another disgruntled alien. It’s a really interesting… sort of… thing… Obviously I can’t talk about it."

Kitsch, Hedlund, Hammer Up For Catching Fire Role

Taylor Kitsch, Garrett Hedlund and Armie Hammer are the frontrunners to play Finnick Odair in the upcoming sequel "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" says E! (via The Playlist). In the books, Odair is a handsome and tan 24-year-old from District 4 who won the annual Hunger Games ten years earlier armed with a trident and a net. He's known for having many lovers around the Capitol.

"Slumdog Millionaire" scribe Simon Beaufoy had signed on to originally go ahead and adapt author Suzanne Collins' next novel in the series a while back when Gary Ross was attached to direct. Since Francis Lawrence has replaced Ross, a new script is being commissioned.

Whomever the choice, we should expect to hear some more concrete news in the next week or so.

None of the actor's reps have commented on the story, while a Lionsgate spokesuit says "As with the first film, we won't be confirming, denying or commenting on any casting rumors for this title. We will announce news wide when there is official casting news to announce."

Feige On Thor 2, Beyond

Discussing the success of "The Avengers", Marvel suit Kevin Feige, tells Empire (via CBM) that despite his closing credit cameo in the film - don't expect the vile Thanos to be making another appearence any time soon.

Asked whether the character is the big villain in Thor 2 Feige says "No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist".

The best educated online guess right now is the Enchantress--Although Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) is in talks to join the film as an unspecified villain

Feige says the "Thor" sequel will show different areas of Asgard, not just the palaces of the ruling class - "We’re going to see the other side of Asgard. It’s not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman)."

Jaimie Alexander is returning to play Sif and Idris Elba will be reprising the role of Heimdall and Anthony Hopkins will be back a Thor's Poppa

Alan Taylor will direct the sequel that is expected to be on a larger scale than the first film with double the amount of Asgardian characters and the inclusion of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) battling more mythical Norse creatures.

"Saving Private Ryan" scribe Robert Rodat is set to perform a re-write of the sequel. First Thor co-writer Don Payne had written the first draft.

Production kicks off this Summer in London.

Feige isn't letting the success of "The Avengers" be pegged as the endgame for the company - "The Avengers was not the finale for us. It was a giant, giant marker, but it was never the finale. We are already well into the plan for the next phase of our little cinematic universe."

Ridley Scott has stated that his early in development Untitled Blade Runner Sequel, would certainly not involve Harrison Ford's Deckard character in a major way.

That said he didn't rule out a brief cameo appearance perhaps, telling The Independent this weekend: "I don't think it'll be Harrison starring, but I've got to have him in it somewhere. That'd be amusing."

Original "Blade Runner" co-scribe Hampton Fancher is currently at work on the script for new film.

Not so fast folks--Pattinson told USA Today that the chatter is total bunk- "I woke up...and saw all these things about me being cast in 'The Hunger Games.' I was kind of curious for a second. So I called my agent, [My agent] was like 'no one's going to offer you that part.'"

Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt is writing the adapted script.

Based on author Stephen King's book--the 1976 film directed by Brian De Palma is a horror classic about a timid and tortured girl (Sissy Spacek) who uses her telekinetic powers to punish her tormentors

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, a playwright who was brought in to rework the troubled Broadway production Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark, is writing the new script which is said to be both more faithful and more realistic than the previous 1976 version. Kimberly Peirce ("Boys Don't Cry") will call action.

Julianne Moore nabbed the role of Carrie's (Chloe Moretz) abusive, fundamentalist Christian mother, Margaret White, played in the original De Palma film by Oscar nominee Piper Laurie.

Meantime The Three Musketeers Gabriella Wilde has indeed won the role of Carrie's school ally Sue Snell.

Both Collins and Snell are 2 of the tale's nicer characters- the former a student who feels guilty about a previous humiliation of Carrie and tries to mend ways, the latter a gym teacher concerned about Carrie's welfare.

Production on the remake starts soon to meet a March 15th, 2013 release date
