In the comics, Carol Danvers is a United States Air Force security chief who is transformed into the superhero Ms. Marvel following an explosion involving Kree technology. She later took on the identity of Captain Marvel.
No actress has currently been cast in the lead yet. According to Collider, Angelina Jolie (Unbroken) is the top choice to take on the director’s chair No deal yet though.
The film isn't due out until November 2018.
