A Marvel-ous Battle

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal, (pictured) finds himself in a tug of war, of sorts, between two studios Each of which, wants Jake to star in their respective comic book franchise flicks, hoping to snag him before the other does.

Which Hero Will He Be?

The New York Daily News reports that Gyllenhaal is in line to play Captain Marvel in New Line Cinema's proposed Shazam! movie, based on the DC Comics series. The rumor appeared in a recent Rush & Molloy column, citing anonymous sources. The story claims that the movie is New Line's bid for a franchise on the order of Batman and Superman. "They're ready to spend up to $200 million to get it started," one source told the columnists.

The columnists also reported that director Peter Segal and his fellow producers want to nab Gyllenhaal before Spider-Man director Sam Raimi does...(even though the director hasn't even signed on to do #4). Spider-Man 3 (due May 4th), star Tobey Maguire did say last week that he is all but done playing the character after the third installment..

Gyllenhaal came close to nabbing the role of Spider-Man for the first film, and then again, when Maguire had to consider bowing out of Spider-Man 2, due to an injury. Now, the star apparently remains the top choice to replace Maguire in Spidey 4, which is already in the works.

Two deciding factors for Jake, will most likely be money, although, he is probably set to earn a mint from whichever studio wins--and who's calling the shots.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd like to see JG take over for Maguire, if he does not return. Give Shazam to someone else. I think Spidey's a better fit.
