The big screen version of the popular Japanese animated series Speed Racer is making release date news...

Stax of IGN:

Speed Racer's confrontation with Indiana Jones IV at the Memorial Day '08 box office has been averted. Warner Bros. has announced that it has shifted the release date for the live-action feature film version of the cartoon classic to May 9.

The film, written and to be directed by the Wachowski brothers, will open day-and-date in the U.S. and internationally.

"We have been excited about Speed Racer since we first announced the project. We see it as a movie with broad-based, worldwide appeal -- from adults to teens to families -- making it the perfect film to lead off our exciting 2008 Summer slate, " Warners' domestic distribution president Dan Fellman said in a statement.

"We want to give Speed Racer the maximum playability throughout the season, so moving it up to the earliest possible date made the most sense."

Warners' international distribution honcho Versonika Kwan-Rubinek added, "Opening Speed Racer day-and-date with the U.S. in most international markets will not only allow audiences to see the film early but will maximize business before the start of the European Soccer Championships."

Let's be honest--The reason the date was moved up was to get out of Indy's way. It had nothing to do with some sporting event happening overseas.

...And then, there are reports that the film's producers may have found an actor to drive the Mach 5...

Garth Franklin of Dark Horizons:

"High School Musical" and "Hairspray" star Zac Efron (pictured) is in talks to star in the title role of "Speed Racer" according to Just Jared.

Zac was apparently granted permission by Disney to leave the "High School Musical 2" set for a day so that he could attend the Speed Racer callback audition....

At one time, Keanu Reeves was rumored to be hovering around the title role...Now that I think about it, Reeves may be a tad older than the character, is supposed to be.

I know nothing 0f Efron's talent, but I can tell you that, High School Musical is very popular among the female teen aged members of my family.
