There was a real smack down at the box office this past weekend. And as it turns out, mere mortals were able to take out the band of once mighty mutants, fairly easily.
In his weekly report, Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo said:
The first romantic comedy in three months, The Break-Up, made an estimated $38.1 million, besting industry expectations, while X-MEN:The Last Stand dropped spectacularly [to 2nd place with $34.3 million in ticket sales]...
Gray's complete report can be found here.
Meanwhile, Variety puts forth its own analysis of the weekend, courtesy of Ben Fritz, which can be found here.
I think it's safe to say that the outcome of the weekend race took everyone by surprise. Blockbusters take note: Never underestimate the the little guy.
