Sadly, the film industry has lost one of its most creative individuals to cancer...Film composer Basil Poledouris died yesterday at the age of 61...
The first time I was really wowed by the work of Poledouris was for 1987's RoboCop. 3 parts action film, one part satire and a memorable main title equals a winner. Truth be told, I had forgotten his work for the 1980 island romance The Blue Lagoon...Through his work on Conan the Barbarian and its sequel, Conan the Destroyer, his music was as much a voice for the character as Arnold Schwarzenegger was. Another favorite score of his that I will always treasure is 1990's The Hunt for Red October--with its Russian influences and dramatic flourishes...
He is also responsible for the score for Free Willy it's sequel Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home, the sci-fi bug flick Starship Troopers and 1999's For Love of the Game.
