"Did You Catch That Spider-Guy Yet?" Amazing Review

It's only been a decade since director Sam Raimi's still fresh in our minds Spider-Man Trilogy--starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst hit the big screen--and thus it was a bold choice when Sony Pictures decided to reboot the beloved superhero film franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man.

When news first hit that Raimi had vacated plans for Spider-Man 4 and the reset button was being pushed, I was very much against the notion and thought early on that the plan was a bad idea.
After seeing the finished product, I was delighted to discover that "Amazing" works quite well, and is a sturdy interpretation that does a bit more than just rearrange the players to spin its tale...

As the film opens we see that a young Peter Parker (Max Charles) is playing hide-and-seek with his scientist father  Richard (Campbell Scott) where they soon discover that his study has been broken into. Panicked, Richard gathers up hidden documents, and along with with wife Mary (Embeth Davidtz) takes their son to the home of his Aunt May (Sally Field) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) then mysteriously leave.

Years later, a teenage Peter (Andrew Garfield) is a student at Midtown Science High School, where he is bullied by Flash Thompson (Chris Zylka) and with that has caught the eye of new girl Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). At home, Peter finds Richard's briefcase, and learns his father worked with fellow scientist Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans)  at OsCorp. Wanting to learn about his parents Peter fakes his way into OsCorp as one of a group of high-school interns, Peter sneaks into a lab where extremely strong "biocable" is being created from genetically modified spiders, one of which bites him. On the subway ride home, he soon discovers he has gained strange spider-like abilities .

After studying Richard's papers, he visits the one-armed Connors at home, tells Conners that he is Richard Parker's son, and gives him his father's "decay rate algorithm", the missing piece in Connors' experiments on regenerating limbs. Connors is also being pressured by his superior, Dr. Ratha (Irrfan Khan), to find a cure for the dying, unseen head of OsCorp, Norman Osborn.

Peter meets Connors at Oscorp, and, ignoring a call from his Uncle, sees the limb-regeneration formula work on a laboratory mouse. When Peter returns home, Ben scolds him for having neglected to pick up May. Peter storms off, and Ben goes looking for him. Ben confronts a thief who has just robbed a deli. As Ben and the thief wrestle over a gun, Ben is killed. The killer escapes as Peter runs to his uncle. Soon Peter uses his new abilities to hunt criminals matching the killer's description. After a fall lands him inside an abandoned gym, a luchador-wrestling poster inspires him to create a mask to hide his identity and emotion. Later, he adds a spandex suit for mobility, and built mechanical devices to attach on his wrists to fire a biocable "web" for swinging and incapacitating an opponent. Peter inadvertently becomes New York City's folk hero, and he eventually turned his mask, suit, and webshooters into a matching red-and-blue spider-themed costume.

Ratha says Connors must begin human trials immediately if Osborn is to survive. Connors refuses to rush the drug-testing procedure and put innocent subjects at risk. Ratha fires Connors and says he will test Connors' serum at a Veterans hospital under the guise of flu shots. Desperate, Connors tries the formula on himself. But that decision has consequences for both Conners and Peter....

The script penned by James Vanderbilt Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves keeps the basics of the origin intact while altering certain details---much the way Raimi did in his first film. Thinking that comics tell and re-tell origins of characters constantly makes both cinematic versions easier to accept.

Truth be told, I think Garfield makes a better Peter than Maguire--who was good yes--but Garfield's take makes a closer match to the original comics. I had not expected that at all going in. No doubt Garfield's chemistry with Stone helps for sure. Anyone who has seen director Marc Webb's excellent rom-com (500) Days of Summer knows that he's got the whole "boy meets girl" stuff down cold. My crush on Stone aside,  Andy and Emma are great here. Ifans is fine as the "bad guy" offering up equal parts of menace and sympathy. His connection to Parker will no doubt be explored futher...I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Denis Leary as Gwen's Dad and Spidey detractor--really cool and fun to watch.

The film, as good as it is, does take a few miss steps. The editing and pacing seemed off especially during the early going and leading up to the final showdown at the OsCorp Tower. Field is a great actress but I had trouble with her Aunt May. Got really spoiled by Rosemary Harris I guess.  And I think our hero needs to stop revealing his secret identity so much both in and out of costume..PLEASE!

Can't say enough here about Garfield. He is the main reason the redux works for me. I have to admit Sony's Gamble Paid Off.  The franchise is big enough to tell two beginnings at this point!!

TDKR: Almost Ready To Rise!

Two weeks away from the release of Christopher Nolan's bat-capper "The Dark Knight Rises" and anticipation is growing.

Yesterday the studio decided to release various promotional items for the film that will only cause the excitement to get even more intense.

Hero Complex has posted an excellent piece on director Nolan and included some niffty new photos of some of the sets.

Nolan says the primary goal of doing the film is "a unified statement, a real ending, a true conclusion", and the article author Geoff Boucher confirms that Nolan’s ending "takes Batman and his on-screen mythology to a place it has NEVER been before."

Some have wondered if this means our hero dies at the end of the film....

The article also includes an architectural metaphor for the trilogy - "a tale of different levels: the heights of the city, the street level and the underground of caves and sewers". Nolan adds that "the thematic idea is that the superficial positivity is being eaten away from underneath; we tried to make that quite literal."

The film's complete 49-page production notes have also gone online.

Christian Bale Tom Hardy Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt Marion Cotillard Josh Pence, Alon Aboutboul and Nestor Carbonell star along with a return of the trilogy's ensemble cast such as Morgan Freeman Gary Oldman and Michael Caine. Vermont Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy Cillian Murphy and Liam Neeson are also making cameos.

Matthew Modine Tom Conti Joey King Daniel Sunjata Diego Klattenhoff Christopher Judge "CSI: Miami" co-star Adam Rodriguez and Burn Gorman take on secondary roles. Rob Brown and Italian actor Massi Furlan have small roles in the film as well

Nolan called action on the DKR from a screenplay he wrote with bro Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Nolan and David S. Goyer that features Bane (Hardy) and Catwoman (Hathaway) plotting to take down Batman (Bale).

The sequel is set to hit theaters on July 20th, 2012.

"Amazing" Facts And Figures

Sony Pictures is liking the box office generated by The Amazing Spider-Man thus far...

The reboot bowed on July 3rd, and had the biggest Tuesday opening of all time with just over $35 million.

The pic pulled in an additional $23.4 million, the second-highest daily gross for a film playing on July 4th ("Transformers" still holds that record).  On Thursday it made around $16.3 million and estimates now have the film pulling in around $130-140 million in the states by the end of the weekend.

The studio used the film's official Facebook page, to confirm that the movie is just the first in a planned new 'trilogy' : 'The Amazing Spider-Man' is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero's journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents.
"--Richard (Campbell Scott) and Mary (Embeth Davidtz)

Producer Matthew Tolmach mentioned the trilogy possibility on the record to SHH last week, saying

"We knew that it was going to be more than one [installment], and at the very least three. We're going to let this movie tell us what the story is."

Sony hired Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to work on the screenplay for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and it wants it out by May 2nd 2014. Speculation is already high about potential villains from The Chameleon and Norman Osborn to the eventual creation of the Sinister Six---and then there's the After Credits Scene to consider but nothing has been decided on yet.

Going to Spidey this Afternoon...I hope to have my review posted over the weekend...

Box Office Preview: Spidey Comes Out Swinging

Things really start to swing at the cineplex today as Andrew Garfield starts his tenure as The Amazing Spider-Man (reviews); While the Katy Perry docu Part of Me (reviews) hits the stage in 3-D on Thursday; And Oliver Stone unleashes his Savages (reviews) on Friday.

Pamela McClintock of THR:

Marking the summer's second superhero tentpole, The Amazing Spider-Man begins spinning its web at the North American box office at midnight Monday, hoping to relaunch the crucial franchise.

Spider-Man features a new look and feel, along with a new director -- Marc Webb -- and cast. Andrew Garfield replaces Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man, while Emma Stone plays the love interest.

Bullish box-office observers believe that Spider-Man could gross north of $120 million during the course of its six-day debut, while Sony puts the number in the $110 million to $120 million range, saying that's a strong start for a reboot.

The 3D movie is already doing bang-up business overseas, where it opened to a stellar $50.1 million from only 13 markets over the weekend. Spider-Man towered in Asia, led by Korea ($13.4 million) and Japan ($11.4 million), doing bigger business in some territories than box-office goliath The Avengers.

Prerelease tracking in North America shows that males of all ages are keen to see the film, while younger females also are expressing strong interest, thanks to the youthful cast and love story at the heart of the movie. Also, Sony's marketing campaign emphasized the untold story and secret that drives Peter Parker.

Spider-Man has more than two weeks of solid play time before Warner Bros. unfurls Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

The other two Fourth of July holiday entries are Paramount's concert documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me, which opens Thursday, and Universal's R-rated Savages, which bows Friday.

Part of Me opens across North America on Thursday following fan sneaks on Monday in 100 theaters. The advance screenings are designed to spark good word-of-mouth among Perry's millions of Twitter followers.

Box-office observers caution that Perry's audience might not be as crazed as Justin Bieber's fans in terms of rushing out to see the movie first thing.

That's why Part of Me might only open in the $13 million to $15 million range vs. the $29 million debut of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never last year. Instead, Paramount's Insurge label expects Perry's film to have strong legs.

Part of Me also rolls out this week in the U.K. and Australia. Combined with North American earnings, Part of Me should post a global opening in the mid- to high-teen millions.

Final box-office projections for Savages, directed by Oliver Stone, won't be available until later in the week.

Box Office Update: Risque Business

Both Ted and Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper flick Magic Mike do very well at the box office this Weekend...Better in fact than the forcasts had predicted....And Tyler Perry's latest comedy Madea's Witness Protection did well too

Pamela McClintock of THR:

Smashing records and setting off early holiday fireworks, Seth MacFarlane's Ted debuted to a massive $54.1 million at the domestic box office -- the best showing ever for an original R-rated comedy.

It wasn't the only R-rated winner of the weekend. Steven Soderbergh's male striptease dramedy Magic Mike likewise overperformed in a big way, grossing $39.2 million. It's the first time in history that two R-rated movies opened north of $20 million on the same weekend.

Among other new entries, Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection turned in a strong $26.4 million opening for Lionsgate. The trio of films are now set up nicely for July 4th week.

The international box office also generated big headlines as 20th Century Fox's Ice Age: Continental Drift opened to a whopping $78 million from 34 markets, while Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man earned $50.2 million from only 13 markets. Amazing Spider-Man did especially well in Asia.

In North America, Universal's Ted easily bested the old record of $45 million earned by The Hangover in 2009. The film is a victory all the way around, including for Universal, MacFarlane and stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis (MacFarlane also voices the role of the raunchy teddy bear). Ted marks Wahlberg's second biggest opening after Planet of the Apes.

"I want to pay tribute to the incredible marketing campaign that began generating interest from a very early stage," Universal president of domestic distribution Nikki Rocco said.

Ted also a feather in the cap of Media Rights Capital, which packaged and fully financed the $50 million film before teaming with Universal. MRC produced Ted with Universal and Scott Stuber.

Ted received an A- CinemaScore and skewed male (56 percent), though more females turned out that expected. About 48 percent of the audience was younger than 30.

Magic Mike, loosely based on star Channing Tatum's early days as a stripper, also has plenty of reason to celebrate. The Warner Bros. pic generated intense interest among females, who made up a whopping 73 percent of the audience. Women of all ages turned out, with 43 percent of the audience older than 35.

The Magic Mike cast also includes Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer. Warners acquired North American rights to the film for $7 million, which is roughly the budget of the pic.

"This is a win-win for all of us, and Steven Soderbergh hit it out of the park," Warners president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said.

Magic Mike earned a B CinemaScore.

Coming in No. 3 at the domestic box office after was last weekend's champ Brave, which fell 48.7 percent in its second frame -- some box-office observers say moms were otherwise occupied with Magic Mike -- to $34 million for a 10-day domestic cume of $131.7 million. .

Brave, from Disney and Pixar, also earned $6.7 million from 11 territories overseas, putting the film's early worldwide total at a pleasing $158.7 million.

Witness Protection, marking the first time Lionsgate has opened a Perry film in the summer, received an A- CinemaScore and did as well, if not better, than previous Madea films and is Perry's fourth-highest opening (he's made a total of 13 movies).

Lionsgate's distribution chief David Spitz said Witness Protection crossed over more than other Perry films thanks to cast additions Eugene Levy and Denise Richards. African Americans usually make up 80 percent of Perry's audience; this time, African Americans made up 70 percent. Females fueled the film, making up nearly 70 percent of those buying tickets.

The soft entry of the weekend was DreamWorks and Disney's People Like Us, directed by Alex Kurtzman and starring Chris Pine, Olivia Wilde, Elizabeth Banks and Michelle Pfeiffer. The adult drama, earning a B+ CinemaScore, debuted to a meek $4.3 million.

At the specialty box office, Fox Searchlight's critically acclaimed Sundance favorite Beasts of the Southern Wild opened to $169,236 from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a strong per-location average of $42,309.

Among holdovers, Focus Features' Moonrise Kingdom continued to shine as it expanded to 854 locations. The specialty film from director Wes Anderson came in No. 8 for the weekend, grossing $4.8 million for a domestic cume of $18.3 million.

On Tuesday the loooong holiday frame begins as Andrew Garfield swings in to start the fireworks as The Amazing Spider-Man; While the Katy Perry docu Part of Me hits the stage in 3-D on Thursday; And Oliver Stone unleashes his Savages on Friday
