Box Office Update: The "Thief" Robs A "Snitch"

The Melissa McCarthy/Jason Bateman comedy Identity Thief is once again in the top spot--after losing to Bruce Willis' return as John McClane in A Good Day To Die Hard last week. This time it was tough guy Dwayne Johnson and his actioner Snitch that had to sweat it out only to come up short..

Pamela McClintock of THR:

Melissa McCarthy's Identity Thief reclaimed the top spot at the domestic box office in its third weekend, narrowly besting Dwayne Johnson's new action-thriller Snitch with $14.1 million and pushing the Universal comedy's total to $93.7 million.

Snitch, produced and financed by Exclusive Media and Participant, opened to $13 million during an overall soft weekend for moviegoing. Sunday's Oscar ceremony was only part of the reason as revenue tumbled more than 22 percent from the same weekend last year, when Act of Valor opened to north of $24 million.

Exclusive Media and Participant likely wanted Snitch to do more, though the movie opened respectably ahead of several high-profile action pics that bombed in recent weeks, including Arnold Schwarzenegger's The Last Stand and Sylvester Stallone's Bullet to the Head. It also bested the $8 million opening of Johnson's Faster in 2008.

Lionsgate acquired domestic rights to Snitch for roughly $2.5 million. The film, costing a relatively modest $22 million to $25 million to produce, received a B CinemaScore and middling reviews.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Snitch stars Johnson as a father who agrees to become an undercover informant and infiltrate a drug cartel after his son is wrongly charged with drug distribution. The PG-13 action-thriller also stars Susan Sarandon, Benjamin Bratt, Barry Pepper and Jon Bernthal.

A Frontline documentary about how changes to U.S. federal drug policy encourage prisoners to rat on their cronies provided the original inspiration for Snitch.

Coming in No. 3 after Identity Thief and Snitch was the animated Escape From Planet Earth, which moved up the chart in its second outing, grossing $11 million for a domestic total of $35.1 million. The Weinstein Co. is distributing the film.

The adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' romantic drama Safe Haven placed No. 4, falling 50 percent in its second weekend to gross $10.6 million for a domestic total of $48.1 million.

Last weekend, Identity Thief -- the top-grossing film of 2013 -- ceded the No. 1 spot to Bruce Willis starrer A Good Day to Die Hard.

Die Hard tumbled 60 percent in its second weekend, grossing $10 million to come in No. 5. From 20th Century Fox, the movie's domestic total through Sunday is $51.8 million.

Microbudgeted horror pic Dark Skies, the weekend's other new entry, placed No. 6 with $8.9 million.

Dimension Films released Dark Skies, about a couple trying to save their children from an alien presence. Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton and Dakota Goyo star, with Jason Blum, Couper Samuelson and Jeannette Brill producing. Scott Stewart wrote and directed Dark Skies, which cost $3.5 million.

Below are estimates for the top 10 films of Feb. 22-24 weekend at the domestic box office.

Cap 2 Is A "Political Thriller"

Marvel Studio chief Kevin Feige says that the upcoming sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is more akin to a political thriller than the historical fantasy adventure that the first movie was. Asked by Variety  about comic book movie adaptations in general, Feige says:

"If it is a fad, it's one that lasts 30 to 40 years, as the Western did, because each one is so different. There's an opportunity to graft almost sub-genres onto them. Our first Captain America film was a World War II picture, and the next is a political thriller. They all have their own textures and patinas, and that's what is exciting about it."

The story is expected to follow the acclaimed comic storyline The Winter Soldier in which Captain America's (Chris Evans) sidekick Bucky (Sebastian Stan) is resurrected as a brainwashed super-assassin known as the Winter Solider. The tale also follows that Peggy's (played by Hayley Atwell in Captain America: The First Avenger) niece Sharon (Revenge star Emily VanCamp) meets Cap.

Anthony Mackie is poised to play Harlem crime fighter Falcon, one of mainstream comics' first black superheroes. Falcon, aka. Sam Wilson, can telepathically talk to birds and has a suit that allows him to fly and enhances his strength. Scarlett Johansson will also show up as Black Widow in the film. How big a role she'll play is also unknown. Cobie Smulders will reprise her role of Maria Hill. She joins her boss in The Avengers co-star Samuel L. Jackson for the film. Frank Grillo ("The Grey," "Warrior") will play the villain Crossbones in the sequel. Toby Jones, has confirmed to Hey U Guys that he will reprise the role of the villain Armin Zola

Joe Russo and Anthony Russo will direct the sequel, using a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

Production is starting come March in Cleveland.

The sequel will hit theaters April 4, 2014.

Vaughn Will Produce The FF Redux

"X-Men: First Class" and "Kick-Ass" director Matthew Vaughn has signed on to produce the "Fantastic Four" reboot says Heat Vision.

"Chronicle" director Josh Trank is set to helm. Jeremy Slater was hired to pen a new script draft about four individuals who gained superpowers after exposure to cosmic rays during a scientific mission to outer space.

Michael Green ("Green Lantern") wrote the previous draft

The first Fantastic Four in 2005 and its sequel 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007--both helmed by Tim Story--grossed $620 million despite awful reviews (I liked em both!). Fox wants to restore some credibility and quality to the property, that is currently targeting a Spring 2015 release.

Comic creator and Fox's Creative Consultant on their Marvel superhero films Mark Millar tweeted Friday: "Just off the phone with Fox and some excellent news -- Matthew Vaughn is producing Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot"

A Sequel Eyed For "Jack Reacher"?

Paramount Pictures might be looking into making a sequel to the Tom Cruise actioner "Jack Reacher after all says Deadline.

The $60 million dollar adaptation of author Lee Child's Jack Reacher book One Shot has made $80 million domestically, and has performed even better overseas making an additional $125 million on top of that. The reviews for 'Reacher' were solid, but not spectacular.

The suits are said to figuring out the sequel's direction and they will most likely try to keep the budget around the same as the first.

With nineteen Reacher books already completed, most of which tell stand alone stories (or could easily be adapted to reflect that), there's plenty of pre-written sequels for them to consider.

Box Office Preview: A Snitch Tries To Beat A Rat

Oscar weekend 2013 sees just 2 new films take to the cineplex as man of action Dwayne Johnson turns Snitch (reviews) to protect his son Rafi Gavron; Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton live under some Dark Skies (reviews) for the latest horror flick.

Pamela McClintock of THR:

More action invades the domestic box office this weekend as Dwayne Johnson's Snitch opens, hoping to beat Melissa McCarthy's Identity Thief for the top spot on the chart.

Summit Entertainment is projecting a $10 million to $12 million opening for Snitch, but the pic could easily overperform if there is a strong African-American and Hispanic turnout.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Snitch stars Johnson as a father who agrees to become an undercover informant and infiltrate a drug cartel after his son is wrongly charged with drug distribution. The action-thriller, rated PG-13, also stars Susan Sarandon, Benjamin Bratt, Barry Pepper and Jon Bernthal.

Johnson has become a strong box-office draw and has two upcoming movies after Snitch, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Pain & Gain.

In marketing Snitch, Summit targeted Johnson's core fans as well as action followers via a targeted media buy that included football, basketball, NASCAR and wrestling.

From Universal and also starring Jason Bateman, Identity Thief continues to overperform as it heads into its third weekend. The comedy nearly beat A Good to Day to Die Hard last weekend and should gross $11 million to $12 million this weekend. Identity Thief's domestic gross through Wednesday was $78.1 million.

Die Hard, with Bruce Willis reprising the role of John McClane, will remain in the upper reaches of the chart as well. The 20th Century film's domestic gross through Wednesday as $40.5 million.

New horror entry Dark Skies is expected to open in the $8 million to $9 million range. Dimension Films is releasing the film about a couple trying to save their children from an alien presence. Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton and Dakota Goyo star, with Jason Blum, Couper Samuelson and Jeannette Brill producing.

Scott Stewart wrote and directed Dark Skies.

Traffic at the multiplex and art house will slow considerably on Sunday because of the Academy Awards ceremony, although top nominees could enjoy a final burst on Friday and Saturday as moviegoers rush to catch up on films still playing.
