Pamela McClintock of Variety writes in 'Cloverfield' devours box office :
Beauty and the beast made the heart of winter look more like summer at the weekend box office as Paramount's "Cloverfield" delivered a monstrous debut of $41 million -- the best January opening ever -- and 20th Century Fox's romantic comedy "27 Dresses" fit like a glove in grossing an estimated $22.4 million.
"Cloverfield," outpacing all expectations, gives Brad Grey's Par a much-needed victory as it kicks off its 2008 slate. Playing in 3,411 theaters and produced for only $25 million, the pic was produced by J.J. Abrams. It is the studio's 10th best opening on the books.
"Dresses," produced by Fox 2000 and Spyglass, served as successful counter programming in nabbing the 8th best January opening on record. Pic played in 3,057 runs.
With the four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend, Par and Fox are basking in the fact that Monday should bring strong box office grosses as well.
The weekend's only other new wide release was "Mad Money," the first movie distributed by Chris McGurk's Overture Films.
The weekend's other new wide release was Diane Keaton-Queen Latifah-Katie Holmes starrer "Mad Money," the first film distributed by Overture Films. Female-skewing crime caper grossed an estimated $7.7 million from 3,126 locations...
