"Star Wars" creator George Lucas tells The New York Times that with Friday's Red Tails which he produced and self financed--that will be his last blockbuster movie.
"I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff" Lucas was careful to leave himself enough wiggle room for Indiana Jones 5 though.
His producing pal Rick McCallum says "Once this ["Red Tails"] is finished, he’s done everything he’s ever wanted to do. He will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker." Lucas will instead focus on personal films "small in scope, esoteric in subject and screened mostly in art houses".
As for further "Star Wars" films?
"Why would I make any more when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?" says George.
Come come now--facing critical fanboys is part of the deal--My criticisms over the prequels were valid as far as I'm concerned. The main issue I have with Lucas is all the tweaking he's done to the original trilogy over the years without making them available the way they were in the 70's /80's--A lot of the Lucas backlash he brought upon himself. Not understanding how much the original versions mean to a whole lot of people who helped bolster your career-is as far as I am concerned--a slap in the face.
I don't think you are an awful person..just frustrating big time...
Lastly Steven Spielberg has taken the blame for the 'nuke the fridge' moment in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull...
Asked about that, Lucas says "It’s not true. He’s trying to protect me". He adds that initially Spielberg didn't believe the scene would work until Lucas put together a six-inch thick dossier proving Indy could survive such an event - ."The odds of surviving that refrigerator — from a lot of scientists — are about 50-50."
