Spielberg Wants To Remake "West Side Story"

Steven Spielberg is reportedly interested in directing a remake of the 1961 movie musical "West Side Story" says Deadline.

The classic film directed by Robert Wise, is based on the 1957 Broadway musical that followed Maria (Natalie Wood) and Tony (Richard Beymer) who fall in love, even though they are both affiliated with rival gangs. Said musical is itself based upon William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Fox has revived the project specifically because of Spielberg's interest, though no screen writer is  set to pen the adapted screenplay. If it does go forward it would be only the second remake Spielberg has done besides "War of the Worlds".

The news comes as fellow DreamWorks Studios executive Stacey Snider is considering a move to Fox after her contract expires at the end of this year.
