Doctor Strange Movie: Marvel Chief Offers Update

Marvel's studio suit Kevin Feige spoke to Bad Ass Digest about the incorporation of mystical elements into their Cinematic Universe by way of the long gestating Doctor Strange movie.

Now part of the studio's phase three or four plans--Created in 1963 for the comics--Doctor Strange tells the story of an arrogant surgeon who is injured in a car accident and goes on to become the Sorcerer Supreme of the universe. Using his magical powers Strange protects the earth from attacks from other realms.

How will the use of his powers work in their otherwise "real world" setting? Feige said:

"Are you watching the Cosmos series? That’s magic, [the quantum physics]. It’s unbelievable. If somebody knew how to tap into that stuff, what’s the difference between that and magic? You don't get into it in Harry Potter, but if a scientist went to Hogwarts he'd find out how some of that stuff is happening. We're not going to spend a lot of time on that, but there will be some of that. And particularly for a character like Strange, who goes from a man of science to a man of faith and who traverses both worlds. And sometimes there won't be an answer. Sometimes he'll want an answer – "How is this happening?!" – and nothing. Doctor Strange needs to be a Ditko/Kubrick/Miyazaki/The Matrix mind-trip."

We could see the film get a July 2016 release.

Feige tells The Huffington Post:

"It's time. It's time. I would be surprised if [a Doctor Strange film not happening] were the case, yeah. Maybe three or four years, yeah, we'll see. But, I would like it to be the case. Much like Vin Diesel, I like it when something finally happens, and then we can talk about what it is — versus rumors of what it could be or should be or isn’t yet [laughs]."

Feige indicated that despite rumors of the director short list being narrowed down to three, the job is still very much open. He tells Slashfilm:

"We've met with all of [those three]. Some of those three are not in contention anymore, some of those three we're still talking with and there are many others. We have not narrowed it down as much as the internet thinks. I wish we had."

"Kung Fu Panda" scribes Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger are also said to be poised to pen the latest screenplay draft with whomever is hired as director. Back in January 2012, Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer-the writing duo behind the recent remake of Conan the Barbarian had their work seemingly approved by the studio

Actor/writer Justin Theroux ("Mulholland Drive," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle"), Viggo Mortensen and Joel Edgerton were mentioned for the lead as well. "Inception" and "The Dark Knight Rises" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt was the last actor in the mix before Johnny Depp's was mentioned

Depp is said to have had a meeting "to discuss taking on the role of Dr. Strange." His strong ties to Disney, Marvel's owners, makes him an ideal candidate

On the heels of the director potentials Bleeding Cool reports that: "According to one pretty solid Marvel-adjacent source, Mads Mikkelsen apparently is, or has been, somewhere in the mix for the film's early casting discussions."
