Empire spoke with producer Brad Fuller:
"I think that ‘Twilight’ was the same type of thing we were going for although ‘Near Dark’ was a much darker, sexier, rated R version of that. But I’m concerned that, conceptually, that ‘Near Dark’ and ‘Twilight’ are too similar in terms of a vampire movie. For now, that movie is on hold...with the success of [Twilight], we would not measure up. It’s not the right time to make that".
'Dark' followed a young farmer who is falling in love with a girl, only to find out she’s part of a vampire clan.
In this industry culture of "let's just remake everything in sight"--Any delay- trust me ND will eventually be updated at some point--of one is a god thing says this fan of the original.
Fuller says he plans to move ahead with an as-yet-untitled supernatural thriller about satanic cults from writer Scott Kosar ('03's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre").
Fuller tells Sci-Fi Wire that the story follows a college girl investigating her brother's death and finds a satanic cult is responsible. She soon infiltrates it, "gets involved and gets in way over her head."
Rather than gore/horror, the film will be more psychological thriller...The script is being finalized before going to the studio suits for review.
