Tinker Toys

Author John le Carré will make a cameo in Tomas Alfredson's upcoming film adaptation of his classic Cold War book "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" says The Guardian

le Carré will will be seen standing next to a spy who is dressed as Lenin at a party. The cameo marks only the second time he has popped up in a work adapted from one of his books, the previous being 1984's "The Little Drummer Girl".

Set in the mid-70's during the height of the Cold War, following agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) who must find the identity of a Soviet mole within 'The Circus', the highest echelons of the S.I.S. (MI6).

Asked about the inevitable comparisons that will be made between Oldman's performance in the upcoming film and that of Alec Guinness in the same role in the classic late 70's mini-series based on the property, the author thinks Oldman has nothing to worry about.

"Through my very personal prism, it is a triumph. And if people write to me and say, 'How could you let this happen to poor Alec Guinness,' I shall reply that, if 'poor Alec' had witnessed Oldman's performance, he would have been the first to give it a standing ovation. I'm very proud to have provided Alfredson with the material, but what he made of it is wonderfully his own" says le Carré.

Ralph Fiennes Colin Firth Benedict Cumberbatch Tom Hardy, Mark Strong.Ciaran Hinds, Jared Harris,, David Thewlis and Benedict Cumberbatch co star.
