A back lot at Universal Studios in Universal City, Calif. is the scene of a three-alarm fire.
Los Angeles fire Capt. Frank Reynoso said the blaze was reported just before dawn on Sunday.
Some media reports say the fire started at 4:44 a.m. local time.
Filming could have been going on at the time, and at least one explosion has been reported, he said.
About 100 firefighters are working with the studio's own crew to fight the blaze and ensure it doesn't spread to nearby brush, he said. TV images show helicopters dropping water on the blaze.
Reportedly damaged are two "prop" buildings, including a chapel, and a popular ride called the "Cyclone," Reynoso said.
"We don't know what the cause of this is," Reynoso said.
"It will be awhile before we have it under control," he said
Reynoso said no injuries have been reported so far.
The studio is located north of downtown Los Angeles, mostly within Los Angeles County.
