In another article from the Fall Movie Preview issue of EW, both director Clint Eastwood and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black talked about their take on J. Edgar Hoover's sexuality in their biopic "J. Edgar"
The film WILL NOT give viewers a definitive answer about the FBI director's closeted homosexuality or relationship with Clyde Tolson.
“Some people might interpret it that way. Some people might say [Hoover and Tolson] were just inseparable pals. Or maybe it’s a love story without being gay, I don’t know. But it’s very interesting, the way Lance laid out the script. It was nicely written. It didn’t go to the obvious” says Eastwood.
Black says Hoover's suppressed desire is what drove him to keep a firm grip on power and getting dirt on everyone - "I think it was all in the name of trying to fill that void, where love goes, with public admiration. This is a guy who from his earliest years was told he could never express the love he felt...."
The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Hoover himself, Armie Hammer as his alleged lover Clyde Tolson, Josh Lucas as aviator Charles Lindbergh Ken Howard as Attorney General Harlan F. Stone Ed Westwick as the author of Hoover's biography, Damon Herriman as Bruno Hauptmann Judi Dench and Naomi Watts as Helen Gandy Jeffrey Donovan as his rival Robert F. Kennedy and rising young actor Miles Fisher as Agent Garrison
Eastwood, Brian Grazer Ron Howard and Rob Lorenz are producing the November 9th biopic.
