James O'Barr's gothic comic book series followed musician Eric Draven who is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance.
Like the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed adaptation which became more known for the on set death of its star Brandon Lee , the story follows a rock musician who is murdered while trying to save his fiancee from thugs. He is resurrected by supernatural forces and seeks revenge. That film spawned three sequels, The Crow: City of Angels, The Crow: Salvation, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer, as well as a short-lived TV series The Crow: Stairway to Heaven starring Mark Dacascos.
Wahlberg already passed on the role once before and has 2 Guns and Broken City in his sights; Tatum (who seems all wrong for the role IMHO) started work today on G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation and then has his semi self biopic Magic Mike to contend with down the line. Can either man pencil the reboot into their planner? The studio coonsiders thr film a priority and won't wait around too long
Nick Cave ("The Proposition") did some work on the script which was said to split the action between the deserts of the U.S. south-west and a more urban location. Now though, a new writer is expected to be brought in to work with helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo
There's also the court action between Relativity Media and The Weinstein Company who distributed the original film through Miramax over distribution rights to the new film.
W Co. believe they have a deal to release the film but Relativity argues that the Weinsteins forfeited their rights The case is currently in arbitration.
Ed Pressman, Jeff Most, Ryan Kavanaugh, Enrique López Lavigne and Belén Atienza will produce.
