Despite horrible reviws from the critics, Fool's Gold, with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey (both pictured) shined enough to take the top spot over the weekend...





Pamela McClintock of Variety writes in 'Gold' rush at box office:

Warner Bros.’ Matthew McConaughey-Kate Hudson starrer “Fool's Gold” found enough of the real thing to win the weekend crown at the domestic box office, grossing an estimated $22 million from 3,125 theaters and coming in right where expected.

Placing second, Universal’s Martin Lawrence laffer “Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins” also did the job, bowing at an estimated $17.1 million from 2,386 theaters.

Wild card “Hannah Montana/Cyrus Miley: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” fell off steeply in its second frame.

The Disney digital 3-D pic, which opened at a boffo $31.1 million, declined 66% to an estimated $10.5 million from 683 runs for a whopping per screen average of $15,295and a cume of $53.4 million.

No one was quite sure what “Hannah Montana” would do the second time out, since it was initially scheduled to play for just one week. Disney extended its run indefinitely after the boffo debut.

While “Fool’s Gold” and “Roscoe Jenkins” were both performers, the pre-Valentine’s Day frame was still down from the same weekend last year, ending what has been a record-breaking January-February session for the film biz. On this weekend last year, DreamWorks-Paramount’s Eddie Murphy comedy “Norbit” led with a $34.2 million opening.

On the specialty side, Picturehouse docu “Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Comedy Show” couldn’t rouse hardly any laughter in its opening over the weekend grossing an estimated $507,277 from 962 theaters for a meager per screen average of $527.

Focus Features, on the other hand, saw a strong opening for Martin McDonagh’s comedy actioner “In Bruges.” Toplining Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleason and Ralph Fiennes, film grossed an estimated $471,200 from 28 theaters for a per screen aveage of $16,829.

Sony Pictures Classics likewise was happy with opening numbers for “A Band’s Visit.” Film grossed an estimated $70,580 from seven locations for a per screen average of $10,083
