RIP Roy Scheider (1932-2008)

Some really sad news, Roy Scheider has passed away...

The actor, twice nominated for an Oscar, died Sunday night at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock. He was 75.

A hospital spokesman said Scheider had been receiving treatment for multiple myeloma for the past two years at the hospital's Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy. His wife, Brenda Seimer, told the New York Times the cause of death was complications from a staph infection.


Scheider's career spanned some 40 years on film, TV. But he will be forever known for his role in Steven Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster Jaws, playing embattled Police Chief Martin Brody The character uttered one of the most famous lines in cinema history "You're gonna need a bigger boat." (He reprised the role in 1978's Jaws 2).

His role in 1971's The French Connection as Det. Buddy Russo earned him a nomination as Best Actor in a Supporting Role. OSCAR nominated him again as Best Lead Actor for All That Jazz as Joe Gideon. Roles in The Rainmaker, 2004's The Punisher, (cameo) 2010, Marathon Man, and Blue Thunder are standouts as well. His most famous TV gig was playing Captain Nathan Bridger in the Spielberg produced sci-fi adventure series "SeaQuest DSV"
