The story is based on the popular six-issue mini series "Extremis" by Warren Ellis--the film's events take place after The Avengers. The plot involves the spread of a virus through nanobots.
Confusion abounds over just how the film's big bads are going to come together as a threat.

Although previously denied that Ben Kingsley is playing the Mandarin, Latino Review seems certain that he is indeed playing the criminal mastermind from the comics. However he's a secondary villain - a 'silent partner' behind the events. Instead it's Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian who is using Mandarin's resources and the extremis nanotechnology to create an army of "multiple super-powered individuals".
James Badge Dale and Ashley Hamilton have been cast as Coldblood-7 and Firepower respectively, and it seems likely that they will be two members of that army.
But these photos from the set showing the design of ANOTHER villain's costume - one that's either The Iron Patriot or Detroit Steel. Badge Dale's character is the one wearing this particular outfit in the film, meaning the Coldblood character is being merged with another villain's design.
Robert Downey Jr. Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau Rebecca Hall William Sadler and Chinese superstar Andy Lau also star.
