The epic zombie film "World War Z" made an impressive $111.8 million in its worldwide debut this weekend, $66 million of which was earned in North America alone.
That is the highest opening for an original live-action tentpole since "Avatar" not to mention the biggest opening weekend ever of star Brad Pitt's career.
The premise is based on the Max Brooks' created comic book Set a decade after a virus has turned much of the planet's population into zombies, the story follows a journalist interviewing subjects from around the world about their experiences during the 'zombie war'. The book fuses elements of political satire, war and survival horror as it explores how various nations, governments and individuals respond to the crisis.
The book is actually an anthology, each chapter is essentially an interview of a different subject in a different part of the world, allowing each chapter to focus on how people and nations reacted to the crisis before, during and after.
Though already completed under director Marc Forster the film had several weeks of reshoots last Fall-extra filming that saw the film's release date pushed back by six months from last December to June.
Now, after the success Paramount chairman Rob Moore tells THR that the studio will "actively turn" to develop further films in the series, reviving those plans they had previously nixed.
Meantime in a chat with scripters Drew Goddard and Damon Lindelof, The Huffington Post has posted a breakdown of the changes that were made to WWZ which endured extensive reshoots to retool the third act.
Both Pitt and Forster admit they "barely get a fraction of the book" into the film so have plenty of material for the sequel.
Additionally, Movies.Com has posted an extensive write-up of that earlier version's third act based on a copy of the screenplay that was used at the time before the retooling. Not all, but a good portion of this was actually shot.
