Jerry Goldsmth's Final "Star Trek" Score Gets Its Due

Record label Varese Sarabande has announced that it will release a Deluxe Edition of the original motion picture soundtrack of Star Trek: Nemesis with music composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith.

It was, sadly, one of Goldsmith’s last film scores. Only Timeline and Looney Tunes: Back in Action (both 2003) would follow it. In 2002 Jerry Goldsmith took his final musical voyage with the USS Enterprise and the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew. Goldsmith died in 2004 at the age of 75

The movie ended up being a disappointment on many levels--save for a great performance by then relative unknown Tom Hardy as the bad guy Shinzon and of course the music. It gave Mr. Goldsmith the chance to reprise the popular Main Title March that he created for 1979‘s Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The theme is as recognizable as the music that Alexander Courage composed for the original Star Trek TV Series at the birth of the franchise in 1966. Such is the case here that Goldmith's score was better than the film itself. The fact that this marks Goldsmith last foray into the "The Final Frontier" makes the score special and bittersweet. My copy has already been ordered.

The release boasts Goldsmith’s complete score from Star Trek Nemesis, along with a set of bonus tracks that includes source music, a set of alternate cues and mixes, plus the rare opportunity to listen in to the final moments of Goldsmith on Paramount's Star Trek scoring stage with his orchestra and director Stuart Baird.

The 2 CD set is a Limited Edition of 5000 copies and will begin shipping the week of January 6.
