Trek 3: Cornish Declines Taking The Helm

Variety has confirmed that "Attack the Block" filmmaker Joe Cornish will NOT be directing "Star Trek 3".



 At one point the studio suits were in  talks with Cornish, but now he is "no longer involved".

There were  rumors that "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" director Rupert Wyatt would take over the job of director. G.I. Joe: Retaliation" director Jon M. Chu was also in the mix to call action..

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci who wrote J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" '09 together and "Star Trek Into Darkness" with Damon Lindelof were said to be in talks to pen the sequel after "Thor" and "X-Men: First Class" writers and "Fringe" producers Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz were eyed but opted not to do it.

Now J.D. Payne, Patrick McKay and Orci are co-writing the next film.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho are all expected to return to the Final Frontier in their respective roles as Kirk Spock Uhura Dr. McCoy Scotty Chekov and Sulu.

"Star Wars: Episode VII" director J.J. Abrams directed the last two films will only produce the third along with his producing partner Bryan Burke and David Ellison.

Paramount is targeting a 2016 release for the film to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the "Star Trek" franchise.
