Once controversial screenwriter Joe Eszterhas-the man who penned such pulp erotic thrillers in the 90's as "Showgirls," "Basic Instinct," "Jade," "Sliver" returns with a project about Our Lady of Guadalupe says Variety.
The 16th century Mexican icon, a depiction of the Virgin Mary, was said to have appeared miraculously on the front of a simple peasant's cloak and in the ensuing near five centuries has become arguably Mexico's most popular religious and cultural image.
Eszterhas, who has converted to Catholicism describes the screenplay as "a labor of love" which The Passion Of The Christ's Steve McEveety will produce.
Due to health concerns and surgery for throat cancer in 2001, his only film script this decade has been the 2006 Hungarian film--Szabadság, szerelem ("Children of Glory").
