Paul Auster's 1999 novel Timbuktu is headed to the big screen reports Variety.

The story revolves around a brilliant but troubled homeless man from Brooklyn who -- with his loyal canine sidekick Mr. Bones -- sets out in search of his beloved mentor and high school English teacher.

Diane English ("The Women") will adapt the script and direct the pic.

The film is obviously hoping for Marley & Me-style success
