Meat Heads

As expected 3-D animated toon Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs reigns supreme with a side order of moolah...Megan Fox's Jennifer's Body tanks...Does foxy Fox have a Brighter future -- in TV?...

Dave McNary of Variety:

Meatballs equaled money at the nation's multiplexes as Sony's launch of 3-D toon "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" dominated the domestic weekend box office with $30.1 million at 3,119 playdates.

"Meatballs" provided the only healthy numbers at an otherwise moderate weekend. It took in nearly three times the closest competitor as Warner Bros.' opening of quirky Matt comedy "The Informant!" took in $10.5 million at 2,505.

Lionsgate's second frame of "Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself" followed closely with $10.1 million at 2,255 as the Tyler Perry comedy-drama declined 57% for a 10-day cume of $37.9 million.

Universal's debut of Jennifer Aniston's romancer "Love Happens" turned in middling numbers with $8.5 million at 1,898 and Fox's launch of Megan Fox's horror-comedy "Jennifer's Body" scared up an unimpressive $6.8 million at 2,702.

"Meatballs" posted the best opening weekend ever for a Sony Pictures Animation feature, eclipsing the $23.6 million launch for "Open Season" in the fall of 2006. The debut benefitted from well over half of the playdates -- 1,828 of the 3,119 -- in 3-D venues; Imax locations generated a tasty $2.5 million at 127.

Sony estimated that "Meabtalls" took in between $17.5 and $18 million at 3-D venues. The toon's audience was comprised of 79% parents and their kids...

Nicole Sperling of EW:

3-D helps propel family-friendly animated film to weekend box office win; other newcomers disappoint..

See the weekend's top 10 flicks...

Maybe Fox would have won the weekend if the Transformers had shown up in a "Body" cameo?
