The script by written Jody Savin details the last six years of Wilson's life, prior to his death in 1983.
Eckhart had been in talks to play Wilson for several months
He will also serve as executive producer on the film and record his own renditions of some of Wilson's songs.
Randall Miller's set to direct the film
Brad Rosenberger, Randy Miller and Savin are producing,
Production is due to kick off late spring-early summer.
