Set in the world of rival Las Vegas magicians, Steve Carell stars as a more traditional magic man who is dethroned by a hip younger illusionist (Jim Carrey) and must then find a way to rediscover his love for magic.
Gandolfini would play Doug Munny, a classy billionaire who owns the Aztec Casino where Carell's character and partner perform their show.
Olivia Wilde, Michelle Monaghan, Judy Greer, Sarah Silverman and Jessica Biel are in contention for the female lead.
Don Scardino directs from a script that has seen its share of writers taking a crack at it including Jason Reitman, Chad Kultgen, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.
Carell, Chris Bender, J.C. Spink and Tyler Mitchell are producing the pic.
Shooting kicks off in January.
