Spaihts Writes Mummy Reboot

"The Darkest Hour" and early "Prometheus" writer Jon Spaihts has been hired to pen a reboot of The Mummy Film Franchise says Variety.

Stephen Sommers called action on the action packed and fun first film in 1999 which starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz--The pic was a reboot of the classic Universal Monsters series from the 30's and 40's.

Reaction from audiences on the two subsequent sequels in The Mummy Returns in 2001 and
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in '08 was quite muted--though all three pics grossed over $400 million worldwide.

Sean Daniel will return to produce this new version which will take the franchise in a different direction...by going back.

"I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus': to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before" explains Spaihts.
