Sean Penn Helps "Mitty" A Little

Sean Penn is in talks to take a small but pivotal role in the remake of "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" according to Deadline.

Based on the 1947 Danny Kaye film which itself was based on a 1939 James Thurber short story, 'Mitty' follows a quintessential daydreamer whose vivid imagination allows him to escape from the mundane constraints of his ordinary life.

"Bridesmaids" Kristen Wiig would play Mitty's co-worker Cheryl and the woman of his fantasies. Josh Charles will play Phil Melhoff, the ex-husband of Wiig. Shirley MacLaine is set to play Mitty's mother. Comedian Patton Oswalt will play a friendly online dating counselor who helps Stiller's character create an online dating profile. Kathryn Hahn will play Mitty's sister Odessa in the film. Adam Scott co stars.

Writer Steve Conrad ("The Pursuit of Happyness") wrote the latest version of the script

Folks like Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen have all been linked to the lead role with various filmmakers like Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Mark Waters, Chuck Russell and Gore Verbinski involved at some point as well before Ben Stiller agreed to star and direct.

Production is underway.
