Over the holiday weekend I took time out to watch Christopher Di Nunzio's short film Under the Dark Wing and wanted to devote some space to talk about it
The plot follows low level hood Johnny Boy (Fiore Leo) who is tasked by his crime boss (David Graziano) to dispose of a potential witness. When he encounters the girl (Jessy Rowe) however--he discovers that she has special powers. Thus he is unable to take care of the situation.
Conceived by Di Nunzio and writing collaborator Pedro Alvarado "Wing" is a fine example of the "Less is more" approach to film making. Like John Carpenter’s Halloween or segments of Rod Serling's classic anthology TV series Twilight Zone-Not every question the film asks is answered here. I like it when films take the risk of not satisfying every beat. Rest assured that you are given just enough info about the characters to appreciate their motives.
Nolan Yee cinematography is really sharp-enhanced by the decision to shoot the 15 minute in black and white. Watching Under the Dark Wing was a great little cinema treat
Di Nunzio also made A Life Not to Follow with the same team. The crime drama will release in 2014.
Chris and I will get together at some point soon for a chat about his work and life as a Bostonian film guy which will be posted here on TLR...
In the meantime be sure to check out Under the Dark Wing's Facebook page, The Creepy Kid Productions Website, and Chris' twitter feed.
