In a recent interview with EW, Boseman says the actual casting didn't happen until very recently - literally only a few weeks before the news was announced in late October:
"Not even a month. The real official conversations happened really quickly. I think there were rumors out there, but those were rumors. Maybe that's a form of conversation, but it wasn't an actual conversation, if that makes any sense."
Boseman also talked about the unconventional audition process and explained that he wasn't really looking to be a part of a comic book based movie:
"This was really the first. It wasn't really an audition process. It was more of a discussion about what they wanted to do and how I saw it and what I wanted to do. It was more of a feeling out process and they're really smart. I can't talk too much about it - the only thing I can say is that they are smarter than you think they are. They have a lot of it figured out. This is the part where I have to be quiet. Because the same way that surprise happened at the El Capitan Theatre I feel like it all has to happen like that. I just know they're really good at what they do. And it's not like, 'Oh, I can make a whole lot of a money playing a superhero, or anything like that.' For me, I've always been a person that says I'm not really looking to put on a suit and become a comic-book person. It's never really been something in my scope, as far as a goal of mine. I'm more the person that says, 'I want to do these really cool independent films with great characters with great directors, or studio films that have critical acclaim.' But I think with Marvel, you have the best of both worlds."
Asked about the project's current status and if there is a screenplay for the film:
"Honestly, I don't think so. All of that is being come up with right now. How do they say that: My pay grade doesn't reach that high."
"Captain America: Civil War" will open on May 6th 2016."Black Panther" is slated to hit cinemas on November 3rd 2017.
