RIP Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012)

Ernest Borgnine, the legendary actor perhaps best known for his Oscar winning role in the movie "Marty," died today at the age of 95 due to Renal failure.

Borgnine, who served in the Us Navy during World War Two and later survived a plane crash, passed away in Los Angeles, with his family at his side.

He appeared in over 50 films over the course of his 61 year career spanning a wide range of genres. As well as working on classics like Ice Station Zebra and From Here To Eternity, he became a stalwart of the Western genre with films like The Wild Bunch and All Quiet On The Western Front, he gained a loyal following among science fiction fans for his appearances in films like Escape From New York. He led the 1960s TV comedy series classic "McHale's Navy,"  He also starred in the popular TV series Airwolf in the early 80's and in 1995 he was cast in the comedy "The Single Guy" as doorman Manny Cordoba. He did voiceovers in animated films such as All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 and, Small Soldiers and had  a continuing role in the animated SpongeBob SquarePants series,

For me personally I thought his work in the disaster film The Poseidon Adventure was very special. His scenes with Gene Hackman...two masters at work; his grief over his wife's death gets me every time....

Rest Easy Sir...You've Earned It
