Guillermo del Toro On "Crimson Peak" & Pacific Rim 2

On the stump for the "Pacific Rim" disc release director Guillermo del Toro talked with Rolling Stone about his upcoming gothic horror film "Crimson Peak".

del Toro and Lucinda Coxon (The Heart of Me, The Eternal Not) are rewriting the original script by del Toro and Matthew Robbins that is described as a classic ghost story with a modern twist. It will center on a woman (Mia Wasikowska) who suspects her husband is hiding something,

Charlie Hunnam Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain also star.

Comparing 'Peak' with the other haunted house movie he produced, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark", he says that they're both quite different in tone:

"The problem with Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark was that it was designed to be a PG-13 movie. It was literally a horror movie for a younger generation. I was trying to do the film equivalent of teenage, young adult readers and when they gave it an R rating, the movie couldn’t sustain an R. It had a couple of intense scenes, but it didn’t have the weight to be an R-rated movie.

Crimson Peak is an R-rated movie from the get-go. At the same time, it’s a sincere, beautiful, classical gothic romance that’s very violent and very kinky, in a way. What’s a complete dream is the cast – Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam. It’s amazing. We’ve also been designing the house to the last little corner, and it really is a monumental character in the film. I hope it’s going to be my most beautiful movie."

del Toro also recently told  IGN that the script for Pacific Rim 2 is moving forward...

Despite a soft start in the United States, "Rim" has turned out to be one of last Summer's solid hits bringing in a very healthy $408 million global box-office tally so far.

del Toro says "We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate."

Legendary Pictures has yet to officially announce PR 2.
