Anthony Minghella, the Oscar-winning writer/director of "The English Patient" died today, after suffering a fatal hemorrhage. He was 54.
It was obvious from the very first frame of a Minghella film that viewers were in for quite an experience. I don't say this lightly: There was magic in every shot. He made the "Patient" novel by Michael Ondaatje come alive with an adaptation that captured the hearts if viewers everywhere. Heck, it even inspired the producers of the sit-com Seinfeld to build an episode around seeing the film.
Of course, there was also The Talented Mr. Ripley which is my personal favorite among his movies. Stellar performances by Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Cate Blanchett help make this a true masterpiece...and there was that breathtaking scenery shot by DoP John Seale,
He would reunite with Law for 2003's Civil War epic Cold Mountain His last completed work was Executive Producer on last year's Michael Clayton.
Minghella will be missed. A talent gone way too soon.
