The director behind the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is attached to direct and produce "BioShock", a film adaptation of the highly acclaimed best-selling Xbox 360 video game says Variety.
"Bioshock" publisher Take 2 Interactive gets a several million dollar advance, gross points, and a deal structured to ensure the film gets made.
The setting of the game takes place in an underwater city based on the free market principles of Ayn Rand-but things have gone very wrong. Players control a pilot who crash-lands at a secret entrance to the city, called Rapture, and is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will is not as free as he'd thought.
Writer John Logan is in negotiations to pen the screenplay-while Gore Verbinski said he plans to start pre-production as soon as the script is completed and approved by all involved.
Video game based flicks are a risky proposition--Think Halo The Movie-But I said the same thing about basing a film on a theme park ride...Verbinski and Logan should be able to pull this off.
For its part, Take-Two is developing a "Bioshock" video game sequel, that will be released in 2009.
