Pine Knows Jack

What a week for Chris Pine, first he lands another big film role as a counterfeiter on the run--And now the Star Trek star takes on another franchise...

He is in negotiations to play Tom Clancy's fictional CIA analyst Jack Ryan for the next film in the series reports Variety.

The project is still in the early stages with Hossein Amini (The Four Feathers, Jude) currently writing a draft of the script for producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld -- based on an original concept rather than on one of Clancy's pre-existing novels.

Though Pine is expected to become involved as the film takes shape, it's likely he'll do Star Trek 2 before stepping into the Ryan role.

Pine will be the fourth actor to take on the role in a series which has been a consistent earner for Paramount. Jack Ryan was originally played by Alec Baldwin in the 1990 Oscar-winner The Hunt for Red October. Harrison Ford played Ryan in the ’90s features Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. In 2002, The Sum of All Fears starred Ben Affleck as the analyst in the pic that was itself a reboot attempt that all but ignored the previous films.

Pine makes a good choice--though a bit surprised that he is taking on another high profile film series character...It's a smart get for Paramount (who also owns Trek) keeping Pine busy in order to serve both franchises.

Pine is currently filming the Denzel Washington-starring Tony Scott helmed runaway train action-thriller Unstoppable
