While talking up the trailer launch for his March 4th 2011 CG animated pic Rango....
... director Gore Verbinski told to IGN that the planned adaptation of video game BioShock, which he will produce--with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo calling action, is still in the pipeline despite budgetary concerns.
"We're working trying to make it. The problem with BioShock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It's a really expensive R-rated movie. So we're trying to figure out a way working with Juan Carlos to get the budget down and still keep so it's true to the core audience, you know? The thing is it has to be R, a hard R" says a still optimistic Verbinski.
He doesn't think the disappointing box-office of video game adaptation "Prince of Persia: Sands Of Time" will affect its chances "because it's actually a great story... We don't want to dumb it down, we don't want to make it PG-13. We want to keep it really edgy, and it's a huge bill... right now it's really a budget thing and how to keep the integrity and keep it a Hollywood movie."
Films based in Video Games are a tough genre....Sure they have a core fanboy base that go run out to it on opening day...But they don't seem to have much longevity after that. The only one that's come close to being good in my opinion is the very first Mortal Kombat from 1995 (have not seen POP yet) and even then...Shock may do well but history is not on the side of the filmmakers right now...
