I've been a fan of Ben Affleck ever since Kevin Smith gave him the fashionably male character in Mallrats .
Years went by and Affleck blew up! Leaving us with the first and last written piece, Good Will Hunting Not until 2007 Affleck penned again. This time he didn't only pen a script but also had his directorial debut with, Gone Baby Gone in 2007. That movie was amazing. I waited patiently for Ben Affleck to direct again.
I went the other night to go see The Town. Sat in the theater and watched probably the worst set of previews I've ever seen in my whole entire life.
The Warner Bros. logo comes on the screen and a small description of Charleston, Massachusetts and how tough the town is. The movie then kicks off with a bang. I'd have to say the first ten minutes of the movie was thrilling and already going in for a ride. Good ol' Ben Affleck is back in his good ol' acting style. (He kind of fell off the map for a bit)
After the first heist we are introduced to Rebecca Hall's character-- Claire, (the bank employee who was abducted by the bank robbers) and Doug Macray's (Affleck) love interest. After the heist they re-meet at a laundry mat and get close... Claire tells Doug she knows one of bank robbers had a fighting Irish tattoo, Doug feels as if he has been caught, but Affleck knows better.
Why I just explained the tattoo incident is for the following. One of the most intense scenes in the whole movie was of Doug and Claire out to lunch enjoying their time until Doug's partner in crime, James Coughlin (Jeremy Renner) suddenly drops in. James is the one with the tattoo, clearly visible on the back of his neck.
My friend who went with me can totally agree on how tense the scene was. As she was scrunched up on her chair staring at the screen. The, maybe 3 minutes tops, scene of trying to hide the tattoo was so intense! The movie goes on and more bad ass bank robberies happen. Until the FBI gets involved and start tracking the bank robbers. People rat people out, people fight, guns drawn and fire, and lots of action!
Waiting 3 years for a directed Ben Affleck movie was well worth it. Hopefully we don't have to wait another 3 years. Maybe just 2...??

Jay joins a majority of ctitics who give the film high marks--We'll see if that translates to bigger things come award season...
