Kevin Smith Paying for “Red State” with Auctions?

Writer/director Kevin Smith caused quite the ruckus at this year’s Sundance Film Festival when he premiered his thriller Red State and held an auction for the rights just moments later. As it so happens, the “auction” was a gimmick, and he purchased the distribution rights himself.

Well, it looks like he’s desperate to pay the costs. The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog reports that Smith will sell various props from his films, such as Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’s Bluntman costume and Clerks II cash register, for costs of distribution. The auction will be held on April 10 (this upcoming Sunday) inside of the Pasadena Convention Conference Center.

Smith is never one to be completely orthodox about, well, anything, so this news shouldn’t really surprise us. After all, he had everybody dropping jaws when announcing that there wouldn’t be an actual auction for Red State. Anyway, I’m just excited for whenever I’ll be seeing Red State. It looks like a great film.

You can check out the teaser for the film starring Michael Parks, Melissa Leo, and John Goodman below.
