Deadline reports that director Martin Scorsese may helm a film about the love between screen legemds Elizabeth Taylor and her husband Richard Burton
Based on the dual bio Furious Love by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger chronicles the couple's difficult relationship which famously began on the set of the 1963 film Cleopatra, After falling in love, Taylor and Burton divorced their respective partners and ended up marrying each other in 1964, as well as in 1975 - a year after divorcing. The King's Speech writer David Seidler Taylor married Burton a second time. The couple divorced again in 1976.
The film will be produced by Julie Yorn, Gary Foster and Russ Krasnoff who have already established a rights agreement with Burton’s estate and a pledge of cooperation from Burton's widow.. The filmmakers are reaching out to Taylor’s estate for the same cooperation. A screenwriter will be hired shortly.
Scorsese's films are not really known to be very romantic in the traditional sense--Making him the perfect choice for this project--His characters always have a difficult time with love from Taxi Driver through The Departed and Shutter Island
I hope he ends up doing this one.
