After winning raves for the way the Hulk was handled in "The Avengers" chatter of a solo film starring actor Mark Ruffalo quickly followed. While Marvel has put the kabosh on the
idea several times before of late they have been more receptive to the notion.
One idea suggested that we would see Ruffalo's Hulk lost in space.
This would allow for the character's solo film to be
based on the 2006 comic fan favorite storyline - "Planet Hulk". The story has already been adapted for the small screen in 2010 The plot has Hulk becoming a gladiatorial champion on an alien world..
However, Ruffalo is not a fan of the idea and his reason makes perfect sense--a
Planet Hulk live-action movie means there is no Bruce Banner since the character remains in Hulk mode for the duration of the story.
Ruffalo tells MTV:
"I don't think [Planet Hulk] is the way to go yet. I
think you need more Banner. The whole thing is just him as Hulk, on a
planet, fighting other gladiators. They launch Bruce Banner into space
to try to get rid of him and the Hulk. He ends up freaking out; smashing
up the spaceship, and it goes off course and ends up on this planet of
gladiator creatures. He falls in love, has a Hulk baby ... and then the Avengers nuke the planet."
Ruffalo does suggest that the studio is at least considering ways to make a new solo "Hulk" film happen:
"I think they are, for the first time, entertaining the
idea of it. When we did The Avengers it was basically 'No!', and now
there is some consideration for it. But there's still nothing
definitive, not even a skeletal version of what it would be. I look
forward to going down that road, if we could crack that nut. I think the
Banner/Hulk story line is obviously not a very easy nut to crack."
Ruffalo will return as Bruce Banner in "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" for writer/director Joss Whedon. Production on the sequel is taking place now to meet a release date of May 1, 2015.
